Parental relatedness and parasitoid sex ratios under local mate competition

چکیده

Sex ratio theory predicts that, under local mate competition, a more female-biased offspring sex will be produced by females when their relatedness to mates is closer. We assess how the sexual composition of broods responds mother–mate using Goniozus legneri Gordh (Hymenoptera: Bethylidae), parasitoid wasp that has biased ratios due competition. Relatedness was varied providing virgin with either sibling, non-sibling from same strain, strain geographically similar origin or distant origin. The among mothers had mated sibling same-strain male were and than males different strain. Brood variances higher after mating different-strain males. Previous evaluations responses have not found patterns predicted, possibly because species investigated can control progeny but cannot discriminate kin. In contrast, female G. appear possess both these abilities appears respond in qualitative agreement theoretical predictions.

Sex ratios under asymmetrical local mate competition: theory and a test with parasitoid wasps.

Sex ratio theory allows unparalleled opportunities for testing how well animal behavior can be predicted by evolutionary theory. For example, Hamilton's theory of local mate competition (LMC) is well understood and can explain variation in sex allocation across numerous species. This allows more specific predictions to be developed and tested. Here we extend LMC theory to a situation that will ...

Sex ratios under asymmetrical local mate competition in the parasitoid wasp Nasonia vitripennis

Sex ratio theory has proved remarkably useful in testing the adaptive nature of animal behavior. A particularly productive area in this respect is Hamilton’s theory of local mate competition (LMC), which has been extended in numerous directions to include greater biological realism, allowing more detailed tests in specific organisms. We have presented one such extension, termed asymmetrical LMC...

Effect of local mate competition on fig wasp sex ratios.

In fig wasps, mating takes place among the offspring of one or a few foundress mothers inside the fig from which mated females disperse to found new broods. Under these conditions, related males will compete with each other for mating and several studies have shown female bias in brood sex ratios as a response to Local Mate Competition (LMC). Studying Pegoscapus tonduzi which pollinates Ficus c...

Whole brood mortality increases the opportunity for female-biased sex ratios under local mate competition

Fisher predicted that sex ratios should be even when the cost of producing each sex is equal, assuming large panmictic populations. Hamilton showed that when individuals breed exclusively in small groups (local mate competition), the sex ratio does not comply with Fisherian theory, but instead favours a female bias. Local mate competition has been suggested to explain female biases most often i...
